This Sunday we’re going to explore the story of one of the most iconic Elder Scrolls characters: M'aiq the Liar.
The Myth
M’aiq is a Khajiit, who hails from Elsweyr, and he’s also apparently an immortal as he appears in TES Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and Online.
Now if you’re as much of a nerd as me, you’ll know the series spans roughly over 900+ years - that makes M’aiq one old cat.
M’aiq wouldn’t be out of place today, as (like most folk) he loves to share his opinions with the player character. Whether he’s rambling about children, vampires, nudity or fighting with one’s feet - he’s always got a nugget of wisdom for you.
Many people (including myself), believe that M’aiq is an immortal or an aedra that was outcast and decided to spend eternity tricking poor fools into believing his gibberish.
In each of the games he appears in, you can’t kill M’aiq no matter how many times you shoot or stab him which gives him the same status as essential NPCs so doesn’t this make him special?
Of course - there are the non-believers...
Myth Debunked?
Ok. So it seems as though it is a different M’aiq in each of the games.
He has been known to say: “"M'aiq's father was also called M'aiq. As was M'aiq's father's father. At least, that's what his father said” meaning that he is possibly the son of M’aiq the Liar in Morrowind/Oblivion.
But - aren’t we told to not believe liars?
This is the beauty of M’aiq’s character; you believe what you like. Whether you’re convinced that everything he says is a lie (therefore could in fact be a 900+ year old Khajiit) or choose to believe he tells the truth, and his name is just rather unfortunate.
And say what you will - I still believe it's the same M'aiq throughout all the games.
