It is in the figure of ‘reapers’ that science-fiction and fantasy entrust their creepiest stories to. Reapers can take many different forms but they all signal a dark and often brutal end. Just Geek Stuff looks at the scariest (and coolest) forms of reapers in stories.
Reaper (Overwatch)
Okay, who doesn’t love Reyes? Except, perhaps, anybody who has just been caught up in Reaper’s ultimate attack. In the game, Reaper is constantly cool with black mist following wherever he goes. The single shots of his guns ring out menacingly and it can be chilling to see the spectre of Reaper chase your playable character. In the comics, Reaper cuts a complex figure and one who is constantly wrestling with darkness and cynicism. He is truly worthy of the name ‘Reaper’.
Reapers (Doctor Who)
Probably the best looking form of reaper. These things are just cool. They bring in serious Lord of the Rings vibes which can only ever be a good thing.
Grim Reaper (The Sims)
Okay, he could either be a real pain or after a while, become a friendly visitor that at least had the curtesy never to hog the electronic games. It’s still pretty dark that he’d take people right in front of their kids though.
Grim Reaper (Castlevania)
Annoyingly talkative for a grim reaper, death regularly shows up in lists about the most difficult bosses to beat. He’s so tricky, it’s actually difficult to believe that the story of the grim reaper can be traced back hundreds of years and didn’t actually come about because of this manifestation.
Reapers (The 100)
Possibly the least evil manifestation of a reaper – but that doesn’t make them less tragic. In The 100, reapers are people (specifically grounders) who have been forcibly drugged until they become addicted to a red drug so that they will serve the Mountain Men by capturing other grounders. The Mountain Men then use those abducted to drain their blood. The worst part is that withdrawal from the ‘red’ can be fatal.. Disgusting, cruel and terrifying.
Reapers (Mass Effect)
Nothing will beat Mass Effect's reapers for sheer power. The reapers are the size of god damn skyscrapers (to quote Zaeed) and are set upon destroying life every single time an advanced species appears. There is a cycle of genocide. The only people the reapers ever spare are the ones they indoctrinate to do their bidding. Once the destruction is over, the reapers disappear into dark space and the indoctrinated agents who have become completely dependent upon the reapers slowly die of exposure. Nothing is left alive.
