The Overwatch Shorts Ranked

Blizzard have managed to outdo Pixar with their animated films. The only possible criticism of them is that they are too short. Although they are probably the perfect length to watch between Overwatch updates. Here’s our ranking of the best Overwatch shorts:

9) Alive

A wonderful short focused upon Widowmaker, whose cunning and bloodlust is contrasted with Tracer’s innocence brilliantly. It’s exhilarating but it still only really serves to give the slightest glimpse into Widowmaker.

8) Infiltration

A fun and thrilling ride from start to finish. The chemistry between the characters is as strong as ever even though we don’t get to see much of it. Sombra is as cunning as ever, and it’s fascinating to see her manage to double-cross just about everyone although it would be great to have some kind of follow-up.

7) Honor and Glory

This short is really gut wrenching, and it has a death that can move viewers to tears. It’s rated slightly lower though than it could have been precisely because being a short actually weakened it. It feels slightly rushed and if more time had been taken that ending would have had more of an impact. It’s still an incredible short though – let’s be clear that Overwatch has not made a bad short yet.

6) Hero

Kind of broken, but still going. Solider 76’s short doesn’t even really feature that much on him. He could just be mistaken for a secondary character at first. He’s faded now, with a world that doesn’t want to know him and yet he’s still trying. One of the grittier shorts, and a compelling watch.

5) Recall

“Never see the world as it appears, dare to see it for what it could be."

A stunning short on Winston’s backstory, and baby Winston is utterly adorable. The heart-warming end to it makes this a short that can be enjoyed time and again.

4) Rise and Shine

This short was so good it could make any Overwatch player forget just how annoying Mei-mains can be. Seriously, why trap your own team in the spawn room with the ice wall?! It’s a beautifully executed short, but damn, why is it always robots who can make audiences sob?

3) Shooting Star

An absolutely epic watch that was released when Asian representation was back in the spotlight. This empowering, fun and poignant short really helped show off just what a great character D.Va is. There’s such a beautiful message about friendship and seeking support too that’s impossible not to cheer for D.Va’s development during the film. Please Blizzard, please make a full length Overwatch film.

2) Dragons

Epic, melodramatic and just pure awesome. This short finally got into the serious issues between Genji and Hanzo. It made Genji much more understandable and softer as a character and helped bring greater depth to Hanzo. Overwatch achieved something truly great with this short. It’s thrilling viewing.

1) The Last Bastion

What is it with robot films bringing out the biggest feels? Bastion could rival Wall-E for managing to reduce the audience to tears. This is such a heart-warming short that even if you have no knowledge of Overwatch, it makes for poignant viewing.
